The closer each dot is to a box, the more accurate the color. The change in picture mode could be a bit jarring initially. This chart shows the color checker test results of a display. But it isn’t the color temperature that content is mastered to, so selecting warm gives you the best chance of getting a more accurate, and truer to the content creators intention, color temperature off the bat. TVs are almost always too blue, even when a setting says “normal.” Our eye perceives the blue, or cooler, color temperature a little brighter so we are naturally drawn to it. You’ll also want to set the color temperature to Warm if it isn’t already there by default.

Vizio includes a Calibrated mode for daytime and a Calibrated Dark mode for when the sun goes down. “Also, some manufacturers have different modes for varying ambient light environments. The most accurate picture modes are often called Cinema, Movie, Calibrated, or Custom. These modes have the most light output, which helps to catch your eye on a showroom floor, but have pretty inaccurate color which is often far too blue, or cool. When you first turn on a TV, there’s a good chance that it will be in what’s (not-so) lovingly referred to as “Torch Mode” that’s named Vivid, Bright, or something similar. Let’s take a look at the options from the most basic to the most involved.Ĭhoosing The Right Picture ModeYou’ve probably noticed the half dozen or so picture modes on TVs with names like Vivid, Cinema, Sports, and Game, but you might be unsure why they’re there or what they do. On some inexpensive budget TVs your menu options might be more limited, missing color temperature for instance or maybe even restricted to just brightness control, but for sets over $500 these settings have thankfully become the norm. This can range from choosing the (generally) most accurate picture mode, to using a setup disc to adjust menu options, to getting a full-blown calibration with specialized equipment from a trained professional. Overall, it was nice just to see a projector at this price point that offers some grayscale manipulation and a color management system.Televisions nowadays are normally pretty accurate right out of the box, but there are still some things you can (and should) do to maximize their performance and color accuracy. I could fine-tune the color to respectable levels, but the ending calibration was still a step down from a perfect calibration. The color gamut in the Natural user preset was decent and needed only a minor touch-up. The projector was new out of the box, and due to the limited time I had with it before I needed to complete the review, I didn’t have as many hours as I typically do for a calibration. Delta E errors for RGB and grayscale tracking out of the box were a bit higher than I would like, so I’d suggest a calibration if you want to get the best results from the projector.

The RGB tables were captured from our calibration workflow in CalMAN 5.

The highest contrast ratio achieved was 5,600:1 using the dynamic iris. The highest native contrast ratio (dynamic iris off) obtained in my calibration was measured at 600:1. The projector had approximately 8 hours on it during calibration. All of the calibration was done with the dynamic contrast disabled, and the contrast ratio measurements were done with both the dynamic iris off and in high speed. There was no gamma adjustment, but final gamma ended up close to 2.2. All calibration was done off my reference 120-inch 1.78:1 Stewart Filmscreen StudioTek 100 screen, and contrast measurements were taken using a Minolta T-10 meter approximately 4 inches from the front of the lens.Īll of the measurements were taken with the projector in the Natural preset with the power consumption in Eco mode.

A DVDO 4K TPG was used as the pattern generator for calibration, and the Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark, 2nd Edition Blu-ray and Ted’s LightSpace CMS Calibration Disk were used for initial setup patterns and verification tools. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2045 I reviewed had 0 hours on it when I received the sample.Īll calibration readings were taken with a Colorimetry Research CR-100 tristimulus colorimeter profiled to a Jeti 1211 spectroradiometer in CalMAN 5.
